Philadelphia Mesothelioma Attorneys: New Protein Blood Test May Allow For Early Detection of Malignant Mesothelioma

The Philadelphia mesothelioma lawyers at Brookman, Rosenberg, Brown & Sandler recently reviewed a research article that appeared in the October issue of the PLOS ONE Journal.  Researchers have identified a group of specific bio-markers that may enable individuals exposed to asbestos to get an early diagnosis of malignant mesothelioma, which in turn would give them the chance for earlier medical treatment and potentially curative interventions.

New Blood Protein Test Can Detect Mesothelioma in Early Stages

Researchers from multiple medical institutions worked in a collaborative effort to develop a test that was noninvasive and allowed for early detection of malignant mesothelioma. The new study compared blood samples of individuals having a history of an asbestos exposure and the development of mesothelioma with those who had an asbestos exposure but did not develop the disease.  The team of researchers examined the concentrations of over 1,000 proteins in the blood samples and was able to discover a panel of 13 blood proteins that can be linked to the disease even in its earliest stages.  Essentially, this means that patients could be diagnosed earlier, thereby starting effective treatments sooner with the potential for increased survival rates and a better quality of life.

Using the 13-biomarker panel, the detection of malignant mesothelioma had an overall accuracy rate of 92%.  The sensitivity for detection of the disease in Stage I and Stage II was 88% which indicates that the majority of malignant mesothelioma cases at the earlier potentially curable stages could be detected through the use of the new blood test.
